Lake Tahoe Ski Report 2021/2022

California was hit with an atmospheric river during the second week of December, and it aligned with a much needed cold front to produce snow. Several feet of snow fell across the region, and resorts are preparing for the 2021/2022 ski season.

This was a delightful Christmas present for skiers, boarders and all of Northern California. With so many years of fire and drought, this may be the snow pack that will help improve environmental conditions for next year.

The National Weather Service issued another Winter Storm Warning that will end mid day on December 16th. The weekend looks like powder skiing under a mix of light snow and partly cloudy skies.

We even have a few sunny days to kick off the ski season! The next storm looks to approach around December 20th. There will be light snow falling throughout the rest of the month, making Lake Tahoe and Truckee the place to be this holiday season!

Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Opening Information

Northstar California

Northstar is currently open from 8:30 am to 4pm with 17% of their terrain open. There are 18 trails and 6 lifts open as of December 16th. Open lifts:

The Big Easy Quad

Vista Express

Big Springs Express/Gondola

They have enough snow to get the entire resort open, but it takes time to groom the terrain and set up boundaries to prepare for opening. Check out this link for up to date Northstar California lift status.

Palisades Tahoe (Squaw Valley)

The Squaw Valley Ski Resort changed their name to Palisades Tahoe. Their lift tickets and season passes still include access to both mountains.

Palisades Tahoe had a few beginner lifts open prior to this winter storm. The following are the lift opening dates:

Wednesday 12/15: Treeline Cirque, Resort Chair, Red Dog and SnoVentures.

Thursday 12/16: Roundhouse and Exhibition.

Friday 12/17: Summit Express and Big Carpet.

Saturday 12/18: Siberia Express, Big Blue Express, Gold Coast Express, Shirley Lake Express, Belmont, Mountain Meadow, Bailey’s Beach, The Funitel and the Aerial Tram. Click this link for up to date Palisades Tahoe lift status.

Alpine Meadows Ski Resort

Alpine Meadows currently has been without power so they haven't quite opened yet. As this storm passes, they expect to be open for the weekend. Click this link for up to date Alpine Meadows lift status.

Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl currently has 43 inches of snow at the base and 55 inches at the summit. They are currently open from 9pm to 4pm. 37 of their runs are open, 13 of which are groomed. They have 5 lifts scheduled to open on December 16th, with only one running currently. Click this link for up to date Sugar Bowl lift status.

Tahoe Donner Ski Resort

Tahoe Donner Ski Resort is scheduled to open on Saturday December 18th. They received more than 4 feet of snow with the first storm and will open with a significant snowpack after this storm passes. They are busy grooming their trails.

Their website says: "You are welcome to head out to “adventure” ski. You may be lucky and find some corduroy….. but our priority this week is prepare the best base for the best skier surface starting opening day & beyond. Please stay out of the groomers’ way if you see them out there!" Day tickets, rentals and lessons will go on sale online starting December 15th at 11am.

We are so excited to have all ski resorts opening around Truckee, North Lake Tahoe and Incline Village in time for Christmas. It may be an epic winter at Lake Tahoe with La Nina...fingers crossed!

The real estate market has shown a bit of slowing, and we are even seeing a few price reductions. The demand continues to be high and listings are scarce. However many properties were priced higher than what buyers are willing to pay. Homes priced well are still selling quickly.
